Gospel – Matthew 5:13-16
Jesus said to his disciples:
“You are the salt of the earth.
But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?
It is no longer good for anything
but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
You are the light of the world.
A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket;
it is set on a lampstand,
where it gives light to all in the house.
Just so, your light must shine before others,
that they may see your good deeds
and glorify your heavenly Father.”
Reflection on Sunday Gospel
Let us remember we are in the holy presence of God…
We are the disciples of Jesus, who said, “I am the light of the world.” Now we hear him say, “You are the light of the world.” The students have become like the teacher. This is the powerful work of the Holy Spirit. This is the same Spirit who was manifest when the Father announced that Jesus is his beloved Son, making manifest the Most Holy Trinity. We are being called to let our light shine not only in our own house but before others. This is an opportunity to examine our good deeds. Our good deeds glorify our heavenly Father. This is more amazing good news: God is our heavenly Father, too.
