Gospel – Matthew 21:28-32
Jesus said to the chief priests and elders of the people:
“What is your opinion?
A man had two sons.
He came to the first and said,
‘Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.’
He said in reply, ‘I will not, ‘
but afterwards changed his mind and went.
The man came to the other son and gave the same order.
He said in reply, ‘Yes, sir, ‘but did not go.
Which of the two did his father’s will?”
They answered, “The first.”
Jesus said to them, “Amen, I say to you,
tax collectors and prostitutes
are entering the kingdom of God before you.
When John came to you in the way of righteousness,
you did not believe him;
but tax collectors and prostitutes did.
Yet even when you saw that,
you did not later change your minds and believe him.”
Reflection on Sunday Gospel
Let us remember we are in the holy presence of God.
This weekend’s Gospel reminds me of how difficult it is to believe what we hear, but cannot see. Even though God gives us second chances through His forgiveness, He challenges us to believe – on the first time. Through the Scripture, we hear God’s word. Through our lives, we see God’s work. As Lasallians and Catholics, God provides us with challenge of believing His word through those that we work with. At times, we may not believe what we are doing is making a difference in another’s life because we cannot see our impact on their life. We may be influenced by the negative words we receive from society. But in today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us that God is the one who allows us to join in the banquet of righteousness because He can see what we do not believe. I challenge you this week to recall our “Call to Action” as disciples of the Lord. And remember, “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” John 20:29
