UPDATE – The Second Visitor of the District Named

UPDATE – 04/24/17 – Visitor Designate, Brother Dennis Lee, Announces Auxiliary Visitors, New and Continuing Brothers in Leadership

Brothers and Lasallians,

First of all, I want to thank our Superior General, Brother Robert Schieler, for his confidence in my becoming the second Visitor of DENA.

Second, I share the very happy news that Brothers Thomas Casey and Richard Galvin have responded positively to my invitation to them to serve as Auxiliary Visitors for DENA for the coming four years. Both are outstanding Brothers who will bring vitality to their ministry. I have contacted the Superior General who is very enthusiastic about these two choices. As I hope you know, the pastoral accompaniment of Brothers and Lasallians is very rewarding. Ah yes, there are challenges, too, but hopefully, Brothers Rich and Thomas will find much joy in the work that awaits them on behalf of us all.

I am also happy to update you on Brothers who will be involved in District service next year.

We welcome Brother Michael Andrejko who will be the Director of Contacts. Thank you, Mike, for generously accepting this important ministry.

These Brothers will continue in the outstanding service they have been rendering in the past:

• Brother Francis Eells as Director of Vocations;
• Brother Timothy Froehlich as Director of Finance;
• Brother Brian Henderson in the role of Accompaniment of Young Lasallian Professionals;
• Brother Joseph Juliano as Director of Administration;
• Brother Charles Mrozinski as Assistant to the Brothers Visitor;
• Brother Charles Nuzzo as Associate Director of Communications.

These Brothers have been involved in District service and they will continue their valued contributions to DENA, but in altered roles for next year:

• Brother Edward Phelan will become the Director of Senior Brothers
• Brother Thomas Scanlan will represent DENA on a select number of canonically-owned boards;
• Brother Robert Wickman will be the Visitor’s Delegate for Boards;

I am truly grateful for the generous response of each of these Brothers.

So, the only two Brothers leaving District service are Dennis Malloy and Stephen Olert. Thank you to Steve who will begin Regional service in August as Sub-Director of Novices. And we will celebrate Dennis’ years of amazing leadership at our District Day in Lincroft/Colts Neck on August 5.

Eatontown, NJ – This week, the Superior General of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, Brother Robert Schieler, FSC, announced the appointment of Brother Dennis Lee, FSC, as the second Visitor of the District of Eastern North America (DENA), whose term will begin September 1, 2017.

So how was Brother Dennis Lee appointed to this leadership position? After serving two consecutive four-year terms, the current Visitor Brother Dennis Malloy’s “mandate” as Visitor will conclude on August 31, 2017. Per the District Chapter guidelines, the Brothers of DENA entered a process of three nominating rounds for the next Visitor in September 2016.

The initial nominating round was open to all Brothers of DENA who have been in perpetual vows for at least five years. The Brothers nominated up to four Brothers. These results as well as the results of the second round were sent to a Brothers’ community for a tally. The second nominating round consisted of those Brothers (18) who received a qualifying number of votes as approved by the District Council. It was during this time that the Brothers and their Partners-in-Mission were invited to share in a discernment process with these 18 Brother nominees. The third nominating round consisted of the three Brothers receiving the highest number of votes and who, through this discernment process, agreed to leave their names in for consideration as Visitor. These three Brothers were invited to write a position paper detailing their vision for DENA for the next four years. These papers were shared with the Brothers and Partners-in-Mission. Five regional meetings throughout DENA were scheduled in December and January to allow the Brothers to hear firsthand, the Brother nominees’ visions as well as an opportunity for Q&A.

In late January, the ballots of this third and final nominating round went unopened to the Superior General in Rome who retains the freedom to choose the Visitor.

Brother Dennis Lee was then appointed by Brother Robert Schieler, Superior General, on February 22, 2017. The Brothers Dennis will be working together during these coming months to begin the transition process.
