St. Joe’s Announces Head Football Coach

Former NFL player Derek Landri to Lead the Marauders

Buffalo, NY – St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of Derek Landri, former NFL defensive tackle, as Head Football Coach. Landri will fill the role previously held by Coach Dennis Gilbert ’84, who stepped down in April due to health reasons.

Landri has an impressive athletic resume. Drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2007, Landri spent seven years in the NFL, contributing to the defense for the Jaguars as well as Carolina, Philadelphia, and Tampa Bay. At the collegiate level, he still holds a record for the most field goals blocked in a game and career at his alma mater – Notre Dame.

“Derek Landri brings an incredible depth of football experience to the position,” stated St. Joe’s President Robert T. Scott, AFSC. “Combined with his own academic and athletic experience at De La Salle High School, Derek is well-equipped to lead our football program while further developing our student-athletes in the Lasallian tradition he first encountered at De La Salle.”

Educated by the Christian Brothers at De La Salle High School in California, Landri excelled on the athletic field. Awarded All-American honors for three years as a Varsity player, his team won three national titles and four state titles from 1998 through 2002. In addition, the senior captain was named California Football Player of the Year.

Landri played during an incredible era of De La Salle football. From 1992 to 2004, the program won 151 games consecutively, a national record. The school credits the football program’s accomplishments to the brotherhood formed at Lasallian schools, and the story has been featured in multiple movies and published written works.

“Above all, I believe we must guide each student-athlete’s development of commitment, brotherhood, sportsmanship, and accountability,” stated Derek Landri, St. Joe’s Head Football Coach. “I’m proud to lead the football program at St. Joe’s and build on the success of the talented coaches who have come before me.”

Beginning June 27th, boys entering grades 7, 8, and 9 in the fall have the opportunity to work with Landri and other St. Joe’s football personnel at a summer sports camp offered at the school. Details can be found on the school’s website at www.sjci.com.
