75_transitions_cardhayesCardinal Patrick Hayes died on Sept. 4, 1938. Born in poverty in NYC, he attended old De La Salle Academy on 2nd Street (1881-83) and graduated from Manhattan College in 1888. An affiliated (honorary) member of the Institute, he often expressed his appreciation of being educated by the Brothers.

75_transitions_brflamiantimothyBrother Flamian Timothy (Moore) died on October 13, 1938, at the age of 70. He was a talented leader and was known as “Father Tim” to the Brothers because of his disposition and counsel. His directorships included St. Michael’s (Phila.), Paterson (NJ), St. Vincent’s (Germantown, Phila.), Cathedral School (Phila.), Newark (NJ), and La Salle (Cumberland).

75_transitions_brgordianpeterBrother Gordian Peter (Brennan) died on November 14, 1938. Brother Peter was best identified with his lengthy work (1896-1924) with the African-Americans at St. Emma’s Industrial School (Belmead, VA), and was a factor in the conversion of many of the non-Catholic boys there to the Church.

Cornelius Luke Named Visitor General

75_transitions_corneliuslukeBrother Cornelius Luke has been named as the Visitor General of the North American districts of the Brothers. His chief duty is to inspect on a regular basis all of the Brothers’ houses of formation in the US and Canada. He had been the director of De La Salle College (Washington) for seven years.

45 New Brothers

On September 7, 1938, thirty young men became Christian Brothers of the New York District when they received their robes and their religious names at Barrytown. At least one of these men is still alive as of this writing in September 2013: Brother Ariston Matthew (Moloney), who hailed from Long Island and who lives in retirement at Lincroft, is ever faithful to his vows.

On the very same day at Ammendale (MD), 15 young men received the robe of the Christian Brothers at and thus entered the Institute for the Baltimore District.

17th Manhattan President
