Senator Frank P. O’Connor, a benefactor and great friend of the Christian Brothers in Ontario, died in August 1939.  In 1965, a Lasallian high school opened in the Wexford/Don Mills section of Toronto and has borne his name since, even though the Brothers were compelled to leave that area in 2001.

Br. Basilian Amedy, the founder and first director of the new building housing La Salle Academy (2nd Street, NYC), died on June 1. A scholarship fund for LSA alums who aspire to enter the Christian Brothers will be established in his memory, and a plaque will be placed in the lobby of the school.

Br. Flamian Emery (Toohey) died on July 2, 1939. Serving as president of St. John’s (Washington) for a year, he held various positions at St. Thomas College (Scranton) for a total of 13 years.

Br. Genebern Thomas (Kennelly) died on June 21, 1939. During his 54 years in the Institute, he had over two dozen teaching stints in Lasallian schools throughout the Baltimore District, the longest of which was five years at Calvert Hall.

Br. Leo the Great

br-leo-the-greatBr. Leo the Great, former provincial of the New York District (1923-32), died on July 5 after a brief illness. Br. Leo had also been the principal of De La Salle Academy (Newport, RI) and also director of La Salle Military Academy (Oakdale, Long Island).

Br. Florus Lucian (Dullard) died on August 20, 1939. A teacher in many schools, he was held in high esteem by students and Brothers alike and served as director of the Philadelphia Protectory for Boys during two stints (1923-29 and 1934-39).

Br. Elwarn Michael (Hurley) celebrated his 25th anniversary in the Institute in July. He held directorships at the Brothers’ parish school in Newark, at the Philadelphia Protectory for Boys (now St. Gabriel’s Hall), St. John’s School (Orange, NJ), and for over 20 years headed the St. La Salle Auxiliary at Ammendale.

Br. Florus Aloysius (Pearce)

Br. Florus Aloysius (Pearce) observed his 25th anniversary during the1939-40 school year. He was the principal of Central Catholic HS (Pgh.), 1934-37.
