Riverdale, NY – Lending insight through their experiences in the United States Armed Forces, four Manhattan College veterans appeared on a panel this week that discussed peace during wartime, an increasingly important topic in the world today.
The event, War and Peace: A Veterans Perspective, featured Manhattan College students and alumni with an array of military backgrounds. Held on March 1, the panelists included Robinson Paniagua ’19, a master sergeant in the U.S. Army for 15 years; Jesse Tossetti ’16, a recent College alum whose service to the U.S. Navy included six tours in Iraq and Afghanistan;Jaime Ramirez ’17, a sergeant for the Air National Guard, and Michael Giraldo ’19, who, in his eight years serving the U.S. Army, was deployed to Iraq twice.
Each of the veterans presented their view of the discussion topic based on their individual accounts of war.
Ramirez for example, whose work in the U.S. Air Force focused largely on IT and computer systems, spoke about cybersecurity and its essentiality in maintaining peace in the U.S. and across the world. “All of our transactions and interactions on the Internet are at the forefront of our civilization. Where we move forward in the future, it’s only getting more complex. Maintaining peace and stability on the global scale is something the military is definitely equipped to protect. As users, though, it’s your responsibility to have situation awareness and make sure you know what you’re clicking on. You have to maintain your own peace and security,” he said.
