We are one of four Districts of the Brothers of the Christian Schools within the United States/Toronto Region and part of the worldwide Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools who together with our Partners in mission serve the educational needs of young people in 82 countries. In Eastern North America we are found in the Province of Ontario, the District of Columbia, and the States of Maryland, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island.
In the 300 year old spirit and tradition of our Founder Saint John Baptist De La Salle we seek “to provide a human and Christian education to the young, especially the poor, according to the ministry entrusted to us by the Church.” (From the Brothers’ Rule)
On Wednesday, September 9, 2009, Brother Alvaro Rodriquez Echeverria, FSC, our Superior General, officially conferred upon us the canonical status of a new District, the District of Eastern North America. This brought into creative and dynamic union the former East Coast Districts of Baltimore, Long Island-New England, and New York.
This new creative action was the culmination of a process of renewal leading to a representative assembly of the Brothers this August which resoundingly ratified the decision to become one new District. The fundamental motivation for taking this action was the choice for new life: together and in association with our Partners, to revitalize our mission of education and evangelization to young people, especially those who are from challenging economic circumstances; for the renewal of our lives as Religious men; and for the future of the Brothers of the Christian Schools in Eastern North America.
We move forward with a renewed spirit of faith and zeal, and trusting in God’s providence that God will continue to bless and prosper the many good works of our new District. With over 50 ministries ranging from residential, day-treatment and outreach works for delinquent and at-risk youngsters, to elementary and middle schools, to secondary schools and university education, the Brothers together with our Partners, teach the minds and touch the hearts of well over 27,000 young people across 16 (arch)dioceses in Eastern North America.
