Four Serve La Salle Academy students while living the life of a De La Salle Christian Brother
New York, NY – Just after July 4th, school started again for students, and four men discerning a higher call, in the Bowery. While providing a head start for incoming Freshmen and conducting summer school courses for students at La Salle Academy on 6th Street in New York City, David Muñoz (18), Stevens Guillaume (19), Francis Adu (19), and Richard Esposito (50) are learning more about the vocation of The Brothers of the Christian Schools. As they discern their call to be Christian educators in the classroom, they are conducting their lives as Christian Brothers, living in community and prayer.
For Muñoz and Guillaume, this is a return to their alma mater. Muñoz, who will be a Freshmen a La Salle University, a Christian Brothers college in Philadelphia, is considering becoming a teacher, and feels called to be a Brother, reflecting on the positive impact they had on him while attending La Salle. Guillaume, a Sophomore at New York Institute of Technology, is heavily involved with his Brooklyn parish Youth Group, and enjoys working with young people.
For Adu and Esposito, they connected with the Brothers in Lincroft, New Jersey, at Christian Brothers Academy. Adu, whose family hails from Ghana, is a graduate of CBA, and will be a Sophomore at Princeton University. Esposito taught for a few years at CBA, and later entered the seminary to become a Priest. Esposito determined that teaching was his calling, and reconnected with the Brothers, this time discerning a religious vocation, as he teaches theology and philosophy at Seton Hall University.
Since July 7th, the three youngest Contacts have been spending their mornings co-teaching with La Salle Academy educators, working with the incoming Freshmen class in a readiness program, preparing students for the rigors of high school, and getting them a head start on their academic subjects. Esposito has been working closely with Br. Peter Nguyen, teaching Algebra as part of La Salle’s summer school program. The Contacts’ service concludes August 1st, where they will join other Contacts and Christian Brothers in Lincroft, to witness Contact Ernest “Junior” Dominguez declare his intent to become a Postulant, the next step of discernment in becoming a Christian Brother, and David Deradoorian profess his first vows, officially and canonically joining the religious order.
